Autumn/Winter 2009-2010 Trends

London provided us with experimental make-up looks with perfectly pencilled pouts, powdered complexions and stencil art-inspired make-up ideas for this season. The 80s and 40s are eras of choice and a more vibrant palette of turquoise, hot pink and opulent purple makes a refreshing contrast to the usual plum and earthy hues.

EYES EYES

Apart from the wild and wacky artistic designs seen on a few designers such as Mary Katrantzou and Louise Goldin eyes were kept fairly neutral.

Smokescreen

The key trend on all catwalks this season was grey eyeshadow – charcoal and soot grey applied heavily and smudged to add depth or a softer, more wearable smokey eye was seen with a lighter shade of grey daubed onto the outer corners of the eyes and discreetly on the lower lash line.

The magic of monocrome

Another key trend was monochrome eyeshadow with a splash of colour and shimmer. Main colours were purple, turquoise, orange and yellow.

LIPS LIPS

Bold and Bright

The catwalk went colour-crazy in London this autumn/winter, but for a change the focus was on lips rather than eyes, with a multi-hued collection of sugar-sweet brights. Tango orange, lavender, bright reds and fushia were all popular for an explosion of colour on lips.

Matt finishes rather than gloss won their way to the top with lip liners being used to enhance the natural shape and give a fuller and neater finish.

Two main trends on lips seen across all catwalks
- Coral lips
- Sugar sweet bright lips

FACE FACE

Be an English Rose

Bronzed skin is officially out as pale and matt complexions are key this season. Powdered skin creating a flawless chalky finish. No shine or dewiness. A sweep of blush on the apples of the cheeks offers a flush of colour.

Highlighter was also a significant cosmetic trend. It was used to add light to enhance areas of the skin. Golden highlights dabbed on the forehead and cheeks were used to sculpt and accentuate facial features

NAILS NAILS

Midnight Hues

In keeping with the moody vibe, nail colours ranged from white, grey green to dark midnight blues and black.
